At ALMA we have several layers of organization, and one of them is the Middle-Management Team (MMT). Its members do not belong to the Core Management Team (CMT), but are managers, assistant managers, or other grade 16+.

Before the pandemic, its members met from time to time with the ALMA director and the rest of the CMT to interact in a space of trust and empower its participants. A dynamic that COVID-19 interrupted, but that since August found a new air and format of one-hour hybrid meetings, held once a month, independent of the CMT for now.

“What unites all MMT members is that we all manage people. The meetings are a space to share experiences or concerns related to people management, and learn from each other,” explains Thodori Nakos, our Development Architect, and the driving force behind this initiative.
“It was a relaxed and participative environment, where we were able to get to know each other better, since being divided between the SCO and the OSF does not always give us the opportunity to share,” says Carla Crovari, our JAO Development Project Manager.

Carla adds that the benefits are not only individual, but organizational: “I think this activity benefits ALMA a lot, because on many issues we need to agree and join forces behind a common goal, and the more we know each other, the easier it is and the better it is”.

Marcelo Jara, our Lead Safety Officer, agrees: “For being the first activity, the group was immediately confident and eager to project the best of each one of us”.

Marcelo agrees that this coordination will be beneficial for the observatory: “Working constantly with the different members of the MMT on different aspects makes me see in a positive and effective way the approach that we want to transmit from the group to the rest of the organization”.

The promoter of these meetings reaffirms their positive effects: “To reach maximum efficiency as an observatory we must be able to motivate our staff, show them that we are concerned about them, willing to listen to them and support them. The intention of the MMT meetings is to reach this level of engagement with our staff,” concludes Thodori.
