The talents at ALMA

At our observatory we are recognized for the science we do, but we are much more than that: we are full of talents!

In October we had the opportunity to premiere at SCO the play “I don’t know what they do to us” starring Claudia Johnson, our Logistics Lead.

With their own resources, at the entrance to the Licancabur room the artists set up lights, boxes, tires and some chairs. The perfect setting for more than 30 attendees, including ALMA and ESO collaborators, to enjoy the show.

“I found the play very interesting, it is a shock of reality. Claudia is contagious with her passion and love for theater and I liked how the actors presented the story,” says David Fernández, our Integral Graphic Designer. “I think it is excellent that we workers can have the space to exhibit these types of projects in this place,” he added.
But there is more. In August, a survey was conducted to find out what extra-programmatic activities, such as courses and exhibitions, we would like to do at SCO.

Among the main preferences for short courses, offered early in the morning or during lunch time, the majority requested a Cyanotype course (53%), learning to make an origami lamp (42.9%), or workshop on everyday survival tricks (42.9%), to learn how to change a car tire, repair a faucet, hang a painting, etc.

For long courses, preferences lean toward digital photography (57%), cooking (53.6%), ceramics (46.4%) and a home garden (42.9%).

Based on that survey, the first Origami Workshop was organized in October, with excellent results: it had high participation and participants were able to make and take home their own origami screen. “It has been very well received. Despite some date changes, we are happy with this first course and its results,” says Úrsula Throm, our General Services Supervisor.
In September we were able to appreciate the talents outside the organization because we exhibited at SCO and OSF the works of the winners of the 2023 astronomical painting contest, organized by EPO-ALMA together with the Astromanía Foundation and the visual artist Animä Hop. There were 12 winning paintings related to astronomy and related branches, which had creativity and quality in common, despite not necessarily being painted by artists.
And finally in November we exhibited in both sites photographs taken by Camilo Saldías during the Inter Observatory Olympics, which were selected and printed by Ítalo Lemus.
Most of these activities were created by the Activity Arcade Team, a group formed by Ana Salinas, Carla Crovari, Chin-Shin Chang, David Fernández, Héctor Alarcón, Ignacio Toledo, Nicolás Bravo, Camilo Saldías, Sergio Martin and Úrsula Throm. The same people who also came up with the idea of installing food trucks of churros and tacos at SCO a few days ago. Initiatives that, according to them, will not stop because there are more surprises to come in the future!
