Cristian Navarro, our Radio Technician I, was recognized with the prestigious Curiosity Award 2024 for his dedication to ALMA’s essential purpose: curiosity. With almost 14 years at the observatory, Cristian plays a key role in maintaining the technological infrastructure that supports ALMA’s scientific operations.

A career marked by passion

Since joining ALMA in 2011, after leading IT infrastructure projects, Cristian has been essential in supervising VHF radio systems, weather stations, and communication towers up to 50 meters high. “I have the privilege of working in unique locations, with views few can experience,” he shares.

His curiosity has led him to collaborate on challenging projects, such as setting up a repeater on Cerro Chajnantor with the TAO Telescope team in Japan. These initiatives not only improve the coverage of communication systems but also allow him to explore new technologies and environments.

Inspiration in daily work

Every day at ALMA is an adventure for Cristian. “Working with diverse systems and touring the facilities makes my job exciting,” he explains. He also highlights the importance of the SOS poles, which are essential for safety on the routes to the antennas.

Cristian believes that curiosity is essential for scientific advancement and personal growth. “At ALMA, we have the privilege of working at the largest radio telescope in the world, surrounded by professionals from whom we can always learn something new. Let’s take this opportunity to explore and share knowledge.”

This recognition celebrates their passion and dedication and inspires us all to continue exploring, learning, and sharing the wonder of knowledge.
