The Asaki Atmosphere
Yoshiharu Asaki’s journey at ALMA began in 2015 as an Associate Professor at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Seven years later he joined the JAO team as a System Astronomer, where his responsibilities include ALMA array diagnostics, troubleshooting, commissioning and online software development for telescope operations. His work is a balance of precision, collaboration and a deep understanding of astronomy and technology, essential pillars for ALMA’s success.
“Working at ALMA is inspiring because of the collaborative atmosphere. The expertise and dedication of the team motivates me to strive to deliver the best telescope performance in the world,” he says. His work is crucial to ensure that ALMA continues to push the boundaries of astronomical discovery.

Diversity and collaboration
For Yoshiharu, working in a multicultural environment is not only a challenge, but a source of inspiration that enriches research into the universe. “Although I am not always aware of the diversity in our daily work, I am constantly inspired by the wide-ranging discussions about astronomy and technology among my colleagues,” he says. In short, he believes that bringing people from different backgrounds together is key to achieving innovative results.
Although cultural differences can sometimes present challenges, Yoshiharu emphasizes the importance of mutual respect and finding common ground in the everyday. “I try to greet my colleagues, follow common rules and communicate effectively, even if there are language barriers,” he explains. Her approach fosters a harmonious work environment that prioritizes inclusion and collaboration.
Lessons from a multicultural journey
“Rather than focusing on differences, I’ve learned to find shared themes and ideas, whether talking about travel, family events, or recent discoveries with ALMA”, he reflects. Communicating in Spanish with his Chilean colleagues has been a rewarding challenge that strengthens relationships and underscores the importance of connection.
Yoshiharu believes that the mutual respect and diversity, for which he was recognized, amplify ALMA’s impact on the scientific community: “The pride that different nations feel for ALMA’s discoveries makes these achievements even more significant.
