“I was thrilled and surprised,” with those words expressed David Guzmán, our Mechanical Technician I, after receiving the “Care” award from our latest Fundamental Statements. “I never imagined receiving recognition from the observatory,” he adds.
David has been with us for 13 years. In the construction phase he was part of the AIV team and then moved to the AMG group. It has been a long road in ALMA, so this recognition “means a lot, because I have been part of the rescue brigade since 2011 and I started to be its captain in 2022. I see that this award reflects my contribution over all these years to the team and all its members”, he concludes.
Next, David gives us his main tastes and personal recommendations:
Reading: I don’t read as much as I would like to, but the last book I read again is “Somos polvo de estrellas” by José Maza, since it deals with a part of astronomy that studies the general laws, origin and evolution of the Universe. For those of us who like scientific divulgations, this book is a synthesis of highly complex topics, but very easy to understand.

Watch: I always recommend the “Star Wars” saga, my favorite is “The Empire Strikes Back”. Also, “Leon, the Professional” and “Trainspotting”, which includes a very good soundtrack.

Listening: Although I like different musical styles my preference is rock. My favorite bands are Rammstein, The Volbeat and The Offspring, which I have had the opportunity to hear live.

Eating: By far my favorite meals are lentils with french fries and carbonada. And if it comes to meat: a grilled sirloin steak.

Drinking: I have 2 preferences. If it is distilled, rum without drink. I have had the opportunity to taste rum of different vintages and it has become one of my favorite liquors. In fermented beers, stout. I don’t have a favorite brand, but it’s key that it’s well chilled.

Follow / Admire: The person I admire is my dad. With his experience he has taught me many things that I have been able to apply day by day in my personal, family and work life.

Think / Believe: Always do the right thing, both at work and with the people around us, even if this means realizing our mistakes, because we have to learn from them. Also, having the support of our families is important to move forward.

Do / Practice: For years I practiced karate, and currently soccer, where I occupy the position of goalkeeper. As hobbies I do aeromodeling, which is to build model airplanes and helicopters.

Dress: I always look for comfortable clothes, usually a closed sweatshirt and jeans. And if it’s cold I wear a beatle.

Travel: One of the likes that I share with my wife is the desire to travel. We have been fortunate to know several countries and different cultures, which leave a memory for life. We are always planning a trip, even if we don’t have a date for it. If there is a trip that we remember and would repeat, now with our daughter, it was the one to Easter Island, since it was a trip we made before she joined ALMA and we had to organize it in less than 7 days.
