Our work consists of observing the Universe, but we never forget that our life is here on Earth, and we are responsible for it. That is why this April 22 we are commemorating another Earth Day to raise awareness about caring for the planet.

What are we doing at ALMA to mitigate our impact on the environment?

Water fountains
With the installation of the water dispensers at OSF we have reduced the consumption of 51,036 plastic bottles on site, equivalent to 1.25 tons of PET (a type of plastic commonly used in containers and bottles) that we avoid sending to the landfill.
The dispensers take drinking water from our internal network and filter it, removing the traces of arsenic normally found in water from northern Chile.

“These machines are ideal as we are not only saving plastic, but they also make us more efficient in managing our carbon footprint,” says Iván López, our Health, Safety, Security and Environment Manager, who adds that there are plans to install two more dispensers at OSF, and at least one at SCO.

Water consumption
The water crisis is a worldwide reality that has seriously affected Chile in recent years. Faced with this scenario, the consumption -without waste- of drinking water is one of our main advances.

For a couple of years we have been reducing our consumption in FSO and AOS. An example of this is that in 2023 we consumed 57% of the water compared to 2017.

Likewise, in recent years we have reused the potable water we use in road maintenance. Last year this reuse reached 62% of the potable water to give it a new industrial use.

These are very positive figures, but there is still room for further work: “We have improved, but we still have an average of 45 trucks a month delivering water, which is enough to fill the Residence’s swimming pool 20 times,” says Donald Tait, our Contracts & Facility Manager.

● In 2023, each person at OSF used an average of 307 liters of water per day.
● In Chile, each person in a household uses on average 90 liters of water per day.

And we are also making progress in other areas:
● We are using equipment that consumes less energy, and with fewer lumens, with the aim of reducing our light pollution.
● Hand in hand with CFG we are managing our industrial waste with new storage systems, which exceed current local standards.
● We want to soon be able to calculate our carbon footprint so that we can reinforce efforts in those areas where we impact the environment the most.
● We are also working with CFG on new standards for equipment and machinery purchases, and especially on vehicles, increasing our environmental requirements.
● Finally, in May we will begin our anti-smoking campaign, which also has an impact on the environment: it means less particulate matter in the environment, and less non-biodegradable waste (such as filters).
