Our collaborators have worked, on average, 9.5 years at the observatory. This has undoubtedly been a period of great personal and professional growth, which has been reflected in the different positions that many of them have climbed along the way.
Jorge Morgado can attest to that. In his 11 years at ALMA, he has already held 4 different positions. He started as Back End Electronics Technician II, and then added responsibilities doing Antenna Control work. Eventually he changed to Array Operator, until in April of this year he moved to Data Analyst, his current position.

“It is gratifying to know that internal talent is being tapped and that little by little a career can be made, that every effort made over the years is valued at the end of the day,” says Jorge.

Undoubtedly his case is exemplary, but he is not the only one. Also in 2012 came Liza Videla, who started working as Science Archive Content Manager. Then, in October 2022, she rotated to Acting DMG Manager, and since July she settled in her current position as DMG Manager.

“Changes always bring uncertainty, but it is in one to take advantage of them to grow as people and as professionals. Without a doubt, my career at ALMA has been a constant growth. The changes of role have meant a great personal challenge, and an interesting and unexpected professional growth!”, says Liza.

Eduardo Chaparro, who arrived at ALMA six years ago as Electronics Technician II, and in June took over as Array Operator, agrees.

“The change is significant in many aspects, due to the difference in the jobs in these two very different positions. These seven years have been a time of much learning and personal growth, and now with the change to Operator, it is a new leap in my life,” says Eduardo.

The same progress has been seen by Eduardo López, who in 2019 came to ALMA as Technical Dataflow Junior Engineer, and recently moved to Technical Dataflow Engineer.

“Each stage has been of great personal and professional growth. This change at the job level is similar to what I was doing, but it does give me much more responsibility and visibility. I am happy for all the road I have traveled in ALMA”, says Eduardo.

The same path Nicolás Bravo has taken in these more than 3 years at the observatory: he started as a Technical Data Flow Jr Engineer and has now been promoted to Technical Data Flow Engineer.

“I feel that this change is in recognition of my work and what I have learned over the years. Working at ALMA has been a great experience, and I hope to continue contributing to this team in the future”, says Nicolás.

Also, in September of last year, Sergio Otarola was promoted from Electronics Technician I to Array Maintenance Group Supervisor, while in June, Cristóbal Achermann was appointed IT Manager at ADC, after having been Technology Development Manager. In July, Norikazu Mizuno took over as ALMA Deputy Director of Operations after being Array Maintenance Group Manager, Head of the Department of Engineering and acting ALMA Deputy Director. And as of this month, Victoria Reyes takes over as Technical Data Flow Engineer trainee at ADC, after being a Student Intern and IT Support-Helpdesk.

They are joined by some contractor collaborators such as Jorge Sepúlveda, who worked on site for Securitas and joined ALMA in January 2022 as Safety Analyst.
