This month, ALMA says goodbye to a beloved colleague: Lorenzo Martínez-Conde, who closes an important chapter in his life after years of dedication, learning, and service at the observatory.
Lorenzo recalls with particular emotion the inauguration of ALMA, a milestone he felt part of after working on the construction of almost all the antennas: from fiber optics to pointing tests and panel adjustments.
Throughout his career, he was always driven by the need to share knowledge: with colleagues, visitors, or anyone who needed it. For him, everyone at the observatory is valuable, because every task—big or small—allows the collective work to move forward.
If he had to sum up his career in three words, he would choose challenges, service, and sacrifice: overcoming fears, always being available to support astronomers, and taking on years of shifts that required balancing family life and commitment. That is why his advice to future generations is clear: communicate, share, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. And to his past self: “study and dream more”.
From ALMA, we thank him for all he has given and wish him the best in his new adventures and personal projects. His energy, generosity, and spirit of collaboration will remain part of the Observatory’s history.
