The observatories always cooperate with each other, except when it comes to the Olympics, where we compete and show our strength, but always in a sporting spirit of fellowship.

Last November 17 and 18 was no exception. We were able to compete again in the Inter Observatory Olympics, a long-awaited event that had not been held since 2018, due to the social outbreak and the pandemic, but that this year finally took place in La Serena.

The ALMA team was made up of 46 staff members and their families. We also had illustrious visitors, such as Carlos Rivera, former Maintenance Technician II, who, despite retiring in July, volunteered to support the team. And he went even further: he cooked fried fish and brought salads for the participants and supporters.
As usual, we competed against the observatories of ESO, AURA and Las Campanas in more than 9 disciplines. In addition, for this year we added foosball, although not as a competition.
They were two days of great emotions and sporting commitment, as confirmed by José Parra, our Archive/Pipeline Operations Manager: “It was exciting from start to finish”, he says.

Together with César Olivares, Mauricio Mancilla and Benjamín Valdés, they won first place in Pool, although it was not easy. The same day of the competition they knew that the second pair could not be formed due to personal problems, so Mauricio and Benjamín decided to join just a couple of hours before the first official match.

There they faced the Las Campanas team, who had been champions the last 2 Olympiads. Even so, they beat them, and advanced to the finals emboldened, beating ESO by a narrow margin. “The experience this year was spectacular, it always is. And my fellow ‘pooleros’ from ALMA, a seven. The first place is a merit for all of us”, concludes José.
