On March 8, International Women’s Day, the ALMA Observatory was filled with messages of recognition for the women who are part of our organization. They were not just words written on a wall, but sincere expressions of gratitude, addressed to scientists, engineers, operators, technicians and our support staff: all of them are an essential part of this gear that allows us to explore the universe and unravel its secrets.
To go deeper into the importance of the female role at ALMA, we talked with Valezka Galdames, RDE&I Officer, who highlighted the invaluable impact of women at the observatory. “Women at ALMA are present in all areas, from scientific research and engineering to the operation and support of complex systems. Their work not only advances astronomical knowledge, but also strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration and promotes a more inclusive approach to decision making,” she said.
The path towards gender equity in scientific and technological environments has been a gradual process, but with significant advances. “The recognition of women’s work has become more relevant, which is very positive. At ALMA, the contribution of women in different fields is valued, and there is greater awareness of the importance of moving towards more inclusive and equitable work environments,” added Valezka.
As one of the messages on the commemorative wall put it, “a single step is enough to trace the path that others will follow”. That first step has been taken by many women before us, and it is still our responsibility to generate spaces that inspire and motivate new generations to be part of science and technology. “It is key to have institutional policies that promote the access and permanence of women in STEM, in addition to strengthening an organizational culture based on respect and collaboration,” emphasized Valezka.

Messages left by our staff reflect the impact and admiration for the work of the women at ALMA:
- “Thank you for giving humanity to the organization.”
- “To the amazing women at ALMA: your dedication and passion drive science and discovery.”
- “Thank you for inspiring future generations of STEM women.”
- “A thank you to all the women who work every day in housekeeping, so that we enjoy this nice place.”

Valezka’s words perfectly sum up ALMA’s feelings towards its female team: “Thank you for being, for sustaining, for challenging limits and for breaking new ground. Each one of you, in your role, contributes to making this organization a fairer and more humane place. Never doubt the value you have and the impact you generate”.
Today, more than ever, we recognize the fundamental role of women in our astronomical community. Let us continue to move forward together, with strength, with our own voice and with the certainty that each step we take opens new paths for the future.
