Our paths with Joe crossed in 2000, when he moved to the ALMA project at ESO. There he played an essential role in leading the team that defined the overall ALMA software architecture. He became Deputy to the European Manager of the ALMA Computing IPT (Integrated Product Team (IPT), before being appointed acting head of the team in November 2010.[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.19.1″ _module_preset=”default” min_height=”143.8px” custom_margin=”|auto|6px|auto|false|false” custom_padding=”||1px|||” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.19.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.19.1″ _module_preset=”default” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_orientation=”left” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]”Joe I would rank in the top five most influential people in ALMA software as a whole. He loved open and even controversial discussions, was always fair and tried to find common ground. He was a very pleasant and intelligent person, on whom you could always rely”, is how Erich Schmid<\/strong>, Head of ICT-EU, describes him.<\/p>\n

According to Jorge Ibsen<\/strong>, our Head of Computing, “He was a mentor to many of us who were part of the ALMA construction team in computing, always challenging and motivating us to push the limits of what was possible. He was a colleague, a mentor and, most importantly, a very good friend. I was very lucky to work with him and learn from him. He contributed enormously to the overall design of the ALMA software system, to the point that it would not have been complete without him,” emphasizes George Kosugi<\/strong>, former Head of ICT-EA.<\/p>\n

“Joe had an amazing faith in the progress made possible by technology and in the perfectibility of the software we produced. We normally gain in cynicism with age, but Joe only collected new enthusiasms. He was a close colleague and good friend for almost 20 years. He always had the best motives and usually had good results. We will miss him,” says Brian Glendenning<\/strong>, former Head of ICT-NA.[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.19.1″ _module_preset=”default” min_height=”143.8px” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.19.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.19.1″ _module_preset=”default” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_orientation=”left” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]For his part, ESO CEO Xavier Barcons<\/strong> describes Joe as follows: “He had a special ability to explore new areas of software, methodologies and languages, as well as to lead and motivate his group, being able to integrate scientists and engineers into an effective working team. Joe will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
