At ALMA, internships make their own discoveries. Six young people have found a way to contribute their professional practice to the world’s largest observatory. Francisco Ortiz, Valentina Rodr\u00edguez, Camilo Gonz\u00e1lez, Dante Zunino, Mat\u00edas \u00c1vila and Luciana Fuenzalida have contributed, either in the Atacama Desert or from Santiago.<\/p>\n

For Francisco Ortiz<\/strong>, this experience simply brought him to one of his favorite places: “I saw the opportunity to do my internship at the largest observatory in the world”. Currently, the Mechanical Civil Engineering student at the Universidad del B\u00edo-B\u00edo is part of the ADE-AMG team. “We review the work we do every day for preventive or corrective maintenance of the antennas,” he says as he walks around the ALMA facilities<\/p>\n

Valentina Rodriguez<\/strong> had the same connection. One day she was walking with her family outside the Santiago office and, convinced, told them: “I want to do my internship here, and that’s how it happened”. Today she works at ADC-SW on the Antenna Deploy Helper project. “My contribution is in automation,” says the OSF intern, who is studying Computer Science\/Analyst in Scientific Computing at USACH.<\/p>\n

While on the island of Chilo\u00e9 grew up a young man who sought to associate his career with cosmic origins. For Camilo Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>, his internship at Safety has been a unique experience. “Here I work in the Safety Department, which is also in charge of environmental inspection,” adds the Environmental Engineering student at the University of Concepci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Contribution in the capital<\/strong><\/p>\n

And from Santiago, two young people are immersed in EPO to contribute with innovation. One of them is Mat\u00edas \u00c1vila<\/strong>, a journalism student at the Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de la Sant\u00edsima Concepci\u00f3n. His contribution consists of “improving the website’s search system. I am implementing artificial intelligence,” he explains.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, her classmate Luciana Fuenzalida<\/strong> is proud to accept the challenge of going further: “I lost my fear of trial and error”. The Digital Interaction and Design student at UDD specifies her contribution: “I have helped with the ALMA Kids website in its four languages”.<\/p>\n

A warm atmosphere<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although their areas are diverse, the six internships agree on the human quality that characterizes ALMA.<\/p>\n

Words such as listening, respect, community, willingness to teach and kindness are repeated among the feelings that Francisco, Valentina, Dante, Camilo, Mat\u00edas and Luciana have received for contributing to the world’s largest radio telescope.<\/p>\n
