While disassembling computers as a teenager, Camila Martínez discovered a passion that brought her closer to the stars. “It was my family’s technique,” smiles our engineer from the ALMA Computing Department’s Software team on the eve of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11.

This young talent was one of the women recognized by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation to be part of Inspiradoras, a collection of booklets that brings together the biographies of 24 Chilean women researchers from the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) world.

“It was very nice, I did not expect this invitation and recognition”, says Camila after having been at the launch of this initiative in December 2023. On the occasion, our Temuco-born engineer met again with a professor from her university and was able to talk with the Minister of Women and Gender Equity, Antonia Orellana, about the need to advance in equal conditions for gender equity in science. “I told her that at ALMA we are making progress on this issue.”

Camila has been a protagonist and witness of how the reality of women in STEM is breaking barriers: “This path is opening up, it is being shown to the world and that is great”. For the same reason, she values the 40 thousand copies that will be distributed throughout Chile with stories of female engineers like her, mathematicians and other professionals who are fascinating for having turned their dreams into science.

“We hope that these booklets that we are going to distribute throughout the country, in libraries, schools and other places, can inspire girls and young people,” said the undersecretary of the Ministry of Science, Carolina Gainza.

The girl astronaut

A machine to reach space. That was the dream Tatiana López had when she was just a child. And she achieved it. The daughter of our Safety Manager, Iván López, and student of Civil Aerospace Engineering at the University of Concepción was chosen to join the Asclepios II mission, becoming an analog astronaut.

She is also among the women highlighted in the Ministry of Science project. Transiting between Earth and the stars has been “a path marked by effort and perseverance”, summarizes Tatiana. Hence the honor of being recognized for Inspiradoras. “Motivating young people in STEM brings a deeper meaning to this distinction,” she adds. Camila and Tatiana are also mentors for AUI/NRAO’s PROVOCA Network. “We reach out to different girls who want to study a STEM career and help them make that decision to develop themselves in these professional positions,” Camila explains. “If you dream of reaching for the stars, pursue them and seek the support of people who will help you on this journey,” concludes Tatiana.
