Less physics and more “physical”

Cosmos keeps us very active, but we must also take our eyes off the sky and focus on our bodies to stay healthy. And that’s just what some of our colleagues from both OSF and SCO have done, and there are those who have gone far in their love for the sport… all the way to Navarino Island!

Hernán Latorre and Cristián Egaña joined a trail race held in Puerto Williams at the end of last year. Starting at six o’clock in the morning they went up and down hills with slopes of up to 1,600 meters, Hernán ran the 25 kilometers and Cristián 50k.

“It was a highly complex race due to the ruggedness of the circuit, which included snow trails. Both circuits covered the island from north to south, where you could appreciate all the beauty and splendor of Navarino Island,” says Hernán. Despite the difficulties, both he and Cristián finished the race.
But you can’t always go that far. Some of those who work in Santiago take advantage of lunch hours to exercise together.
“This group already existed as training, but outside ALMA and the idea was to create a team within the organization so that more people could join and train with us.” says Alfredo Olguín, who has worked for 15 years in our Administration area as Budget Controller and was one of the managers of this initiative in 2019. “The reception in general has been super good. There are many people committed to themselves and to the sport, so they have been very consistent over time,” adds Alfredo.
With recycled implements such as water drums, logs and tires they perform aerobic training near the SCO, either in the Bicentenario Park or in Cerro El Carbón. That is on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while on Wednesdays they focus on strength exercises in a “gym” set up in the courtyard of our headquarters.
“Every day we are all locked up in the office and sports unite us, generate different bonds. There are different ages and we are homogeneous when we are training.”

Ana Salinas, Logistics assistant.

“It’s a total disconnection. Suddenly you have a very busy day and this helps you get away from work for a while and come back with all the focus on trying to solve the problems you had before. It has happened to me more than once.”

Felipe León, Technical Dataflow Engineer of Computing area.

“First they try it, because people get scared and feel that it’s a lot of effort, because it hurts your body. But then you get used to it and the benefit is to have a lot of endorphins, a lot of energy for the whole week. It’s hard for people to break that inertia, but it’s really fun, so come along”.

Maritza Vicencio, invoice controller of Finances ESO.

Que tremenda azaña en isla Navarino, igualmente a todos los colegas que realizan deporte incentivando a quienes nos falta ese empujón para salir de la “inercia “.
