Yoga: A different kind of work break

Many people may not know it, but at SCO we have a kind of “sanctuary”. It is a special place where anyone can take a different kind of break, giving their day a break, and changing their seat for a yoga mat.

This ancient oriental discipline has been practised for almost a decade in our Santiago offices with ESO staff, where every Monday and Wednesday, between 12:30 and 13:30, the doors are open to everyone.

“For me it’s a therapy, it grounds me and teaches me to treat certain areas of the body that you leave unattended”, says Alfredo Olguín, our Budget Controller, who is one of the 8 attendees to these classes.

He confesses that sport has always been part of his life, but for him yoga is a different experience. “Besides, it helps a lot with the physical ailments I have in my spine”, he adds.

Along the same lines, living this work break has been a healthy discovery for Liza Videla, our Data Management Group Manager, who has been enrolled since 2015 in this instance.

“It was by far the best decision! It has not only helped me physically, but also emotionally. It allows you to clear your head and think better,” she says.

Special routine
The person in charge of guiding this unique space at ALMA is the teacher Paula Núñez, who has been practising this discipline for more than 25 years, which she discovered in Madrid. She says that her yoga routine is effective, because it is designed to achieve results that favour a balanced working day.

For example, “postures are performed to reverse the number of hours sitting in the chair. So, the class has wellness principles that accompany the day-to-day at work,” Paula adds. At the same time, she explains that yoga improves health by stretching muscles and oxygenating the body.

“In a modern world, where we are always looking outwards, looking inwards, how I feel, how my body is, the wonder that we are, is also a connection to the things that are important to you,” she says.

Invitation just a step away
There are no special requirements to join this discipline and you have to consider that “it’s right here in the building, five minutes away from your work station, you train, come back and continue your working day”, says Alfredo, inviting more employees to join: “Come and explore, take that little step, you always learn new things that you can integrate into your life”.

“Over time, you see how your practice improves and that makes you feel proud and capable of achieving miracles,” concludes Liza enthusiastically, encouraging others to come along with their yoga mat.
